David Shrigley
De Brock is pleased to announce an exhibition of works on paper by David Shrigley, bringing together a selection of drawings made between 2022 and 2024.
Shrigley is a British contemporary artist best known for his deliberately crude drawings combining simple images with deadpan, absurd or darkly funny text. He was born in Macclesfield in 1968, studied Environmental Art at Glasgow School of Art from 1988–91 and now lives and works in Brighton.
Drawing has been at the heart of Shrigley’s practice since the beginning of his career. Executed in his unmistakably unique style, his works combine simple imagery with minimal text to explore the absurdities, anxieties and contradictions of everyday life. Humour is ever-present, but beneath the apparent simplicity lies a sharp and often surprisingly resonant observation of human behaviour.
Shrigley deals repeatedly with anxiety, death, stupidity, loneliness, failure, frustration and the general absurdity of being alive. The relationship between word and image is crucial: sometimes the text explains the image, sometimes it contradicts it, and sometimes it makes the situation considerably stranger.
The thirteen works in the exhibition exemplify Shrigley’s distinctive economy of means and offer an intimate view of one of the most recognisable and singular voices in contemporary British art.
